Artist's Statement:
My journey as an artist has been more a culmination of different aspects of my life rather than a natural progression. I began my career as a social worker and took many quilting classes both in Prince Rupert and Vancouver as a way to learn something new. I’ve also taken a number of fabric dying classes using both natural and synthetic dyes and enjoy the process of turning plain white fabric into something new and original.
I also spent many hours kayaking British Columbia’s north coast and the experience of quietly absorbing the unparalleled beauty finds its way into many of my pieces.
I took a quilt class locally many years ago as something new to try as I’d been sewing since high school where I’d learned the basics of sewing and began to make and design clothing for myself. With small children, there were many years when my sewing machine sat idle and all I had time for was reading about quilting and dreaming about future projects.
About two years ago, I started to have some time and I began to explore art quilts again. Now a good portion of each week is dedicated to either quilting or designing a new quilt as the majority of my work is original.
My quilts continue to evolve, the more I do. Each one is a new experiment in colour or technique. I always think I’ll do a second (or third) using the same techniques but always find something else I just have to try first. Right now, I am playing with two vastly different styles: abstract and representational quilts.
After I started developing my new style of quilts, I discovered the Modern Quilting Movement. This has inspired me to design and create much larger pieces that are functional as well as beautiful.
I love the adventure of seeing the beauty of life and finding ways to express that in fabric.
